Home Sweet Swamp
When most folks think of the Indiana frontier, they imagine dense, towering forests. You couldn’t be further from the truth though. If you rolled into Wells County in the 1830s and 40s, you weren’t just fighting the tree line—you were fighting the water.
Bluffton and the surrounding areas were essentially built on top of a massive, poorly drained wetland system. The Wabash river constantly spilled over its banks, and standing water from places like the sprawling Vanemon Swamp made the region a literal breeding ground for the misery the pioneers called “the ague.”

The Shaking Frontier
The ague was malaria, and in early Wells County, it wasn’t an occasional illness—it was a seasonal lifestyle. It was so notorious that the “chills and ague” of the region became a running joke in the more established, southern parts of the state.
To live in early Bluffton meant accepting that for weeks at a time, you or your family would be struck by debilitating fevers and chills so violent they were said to rattle the floorboards of the log cabins. It made clearing the land and building a town nearly impossible. Bluffton was the edge of the world, and inhospitable wilderness that many thought only a fool would try to settle.
Draining the Swamp
So, how do you defeat a disease when you don’t even know what a microscopic parasite is? Well, you attack it’s home of course.
The early municipal infrastructure of Wells County wasn’t about convenience; it was about simple survival. In order to make the region livable, early Hoosiers had to engage in gigantic civil engineering projects to ditch, drain, and tame the Wabash floodplains.
By draining the swamps and clearing the heavy timber, they were unknowingly destroying the stagnant, shallow pools where the Anopheles mosquitoes laid their eggs.
The Cycle is Broken
Here is the wild part about malaria: the mosquito is just the delivery vehicle. The disease itself is a parasite. For malaria to spread, a mosquito has to bite an infected human, incubate the parasite, and then bite a healthy human.
By aggressively draining the wetlands, the mosquito population crashed. Add in the mass production of cheap wire window screens in the late 19th century—which physically separated the bugs from the sleeping humans—and the growing availability of quinine to cure the sick, and the transmission cycle was broken. Every time a human was cured, that was one less “reservoir’ of the parasite. If a mosquito bit them, it didn’t pick up the disease.
Today, if you walk the banks of the Wabash River in late July, you will absolutely be bitten by the exact same species of mosquito that made the pioneers absolutely miserable. However, those same pioneers built ditches, drained the swamps, and now the parasite is gone.
The frontier didn’t just dry out. It was conquered by a shovel.
